Earth Day: In honor of Earth Day, April 22, the City of Mountlake Terrace will be installing a solar powered irrigation clock at the Forest Crest Playfield, 5006 236th St. SW. “This will be the first of its kind in the Mountlake Terrace parks system and will serve as an excellent test site for possible future applications,” said Parks and Facilities Superintendent Ken Courtmanch. The system is a stand-alone “off the grid” configuration that will run the entire
ten station turf irrigation system for the sports field complex. The system includes solar panels, a controller clock, marine battery, and recharging system. Installation should be complete by Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010.
A strategy for green building, healthy trees, energy conservation, and a sustainable economy was adopted by the Mountlake Terrace City Council on August 4, 2008. Code amendments were also adopted to provide incentives for business development.
The new Sustainability Strategy identifies ways the City will be a good example and encourage others in taking care of the environment and economy while achieving community livability.
Mountlake Terrace has taken a leadership role among medium-sized cities in Washington to promote sustainability. A sustainability strategy has been developed to set priorities for how the City can do even more — e.g., conserving energy or encouraging green building — and to track progress. This project was funded in part with a grant from the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.
Sustainability is a term that describes taking care of the environment, economy and community livability all at the same time. It means being able to live comfortably without sacrificing the resources of future generations.
The Sustainability project included an assessment of opportunities for clean technology businesses in Mountlake Terrace. “Clean technology” refers to products, services, and processes that harness renewable resources or that reduce emissions or waste. The three principle sectors are: energy, transportation, and research efficiency. With its proximity to Seattle and Everett and its focus on sustainability, Mountlake Terrace has good potential for the location and growth of clean technology businesses.
